Butalbital

Treatment of headache

There is nothing worse than the pain of a headache. The pain radiates from the eyes and the back of the head, feeling like a tight band. It can then spread down from the neck to affect your back other parts of the body. The worst of these headaches usually lasts around five hours and makes life very difficult. Because you cannot concentrate, doing any work becomes impossible.

Butalbital is a non-opioid, sedative barbiturate and it is routinely prescribed for the treatment of the most common form of headache known as a tension headache. In all but around 10% of cases, this is the headache you will experience. Within an hour of so of taking Butalbital, you will feel relief from the worst of the pain. As a more general sedative hypnotic, Butalbital is also used as a general analgesic to relieve muscle pain.

Clinical trials

Butalbital is often combined with other medications, such as aspirin, paracetamol, codeine and caffeine. These combinations are retailed under an array of different brand names. The various combinations with codeine have been independently approved in the United States by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of headaches. A number of clinical trials are under way to test new medications for the treatment of headache disorders against Butalbital in combination form. Butalbital has become a standard drug of reference for these purposes. In these tests, Butalbital continues to perform at least as well as, if not better than, many of the newer medications and remains one of the preferred first-line response medications for those people who have more serious longer-lasting headaches on a regular basis. Such people may prefer the relief of pain against the risk of physical and psychological dependence when using a barbiturate medication.

What are the side effects?

For the most part, there are only a few side effects, and they are relatively mild and transitory. The most common are symptoms not unlike those associated with drunkenness, i.e. that you feel light-headed and euphoric, leading to some impairment of your judgement. You can also feel dizzy and drowsy, sometimes also nauseous. If any of these symptoms grows more serious or lasts for longer than four or five hours, you should seek medical advice. If you experience more serious symptoms of a rash or itchiness, this may indicate an allergic reaction. Because of its sedative properties, it can also affect your breathing.

As one of the barbiturates, Butalbital is physically and psychologically addictive. In many countries, it is a controlled substance and the conditions under which it will be prescribed are controlled. When it is mixed with alcohol, Butalbital increases the level of intoxication, but it also makes it more likely that your breathing will be slowed which can be dangerous if you suffer from asthma or other breathing related problems. In excess, it can make damage to your liver more likely.
